環太平洋学会国際化学会議(PACIFICHEM 2005)がホノルルで12月15(木)〜20日(火)の間開催されました。
5年に1回開催されている会議ですが、登録発表総数約1万2千、8つのホテルを会場として用いる大きなものです。
11の分野で224のセッションが行われ、バイオマス関連としては次のセッションがありました。

ただし、会場が広く、セッションの時間も重なっており、また松村はタイからの移動で途中からの参加でしたので全ては聞けませんでした。
さらに発表が非常に多く、ここにないセッションでもバイオマス関連の発表があった可能性もあります。
バイオマス部会からは、横山様(東大)、坂様(京大)、吉田様(広大)、鈴木様(北見工大)、小木様、美濃輪様(産総研)
他の参加がありました。

この会議は、会場が8つあり、それぞれのホテルが必ずしも近くないので、移動が大変でした。
また、かなりの分野の発表があって、時間が重なっていると聞くことができず、
やはりバイオマス専門の会議の方が集中して新しい情報を得ることができるように思います。
しかしながら、化学を専門としている人々のバイオマスにタイするアプローチを知る機会でもあり、
特にパルプ&製紙関連のメンバーがバイオマスの具体的な構造と生産される化学物質に対して
各種の触媒反応を用いて有機化学的にバイオリファイナリーを目指した反応合成を進めているのは興味深く聞きました。
ただし、実用化はかなり先であり、それまでの見通しを持った研究が進められているという状況ではなく、
純粋化学的興味を主体とした研究のように感じました。
